The connection with the outdoors is very important in Scandinavian interior design. This is partially why practically all Nordic houses and apartment have large windows. They let in natural light which is very important in the décor because it makes the room look bright and open and this complements well the minimalism but they also provide views of the surrounding area.

The sleek and simple furniture emphasizes the openness of the space

The balcony is a very important element. Almost all apartments and houses have balconies, terraces or decks. Even the smallest ones have one. It’s a way of connecting the inhabitants with everything that’s surrounding them and also a way of opening up the home onto the exterior. Most balconies are small but this doesn’t make them useless.

In the balcony, there’s no need for a white décor so other colors are usually employed

Bold and vibrant colors are often used in order to better connect with the surroundings

The balcony is an extension of the home so some cohesion is expected

Roof terraces are always charming and they’re usually outdoor living spaces

The minimalism characteristic to this style is present here as well

Potted plants and flowers are commonly used in balconies

The décor is very similar to what we usually see inside the apartment

Here, the color palette was extended outdoors as well

Sometimes the color chosen match the surroundings for cohesion


Even the smallest balcony has room for a chair and maybe even a table. Here one can enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning or can simply relax and enjoy the weather. In general, Scandinavian balconies are not enclosed. If they were, this would contradict the whole design and all the features we’ve described here and in numerous other articles. There are however exceptions.

The views may not always be extraordinary but they’re not that important

The terrace is a replica of the living room found indoors

As you can see, wood is an important element even in the balcony

The color on the table and chairs matches the roofs of the surrounding buildings

Scandinavian balconies are usually small but they all have comfy seats

More spacious balconies often resemble patios

Enclosed balconies are quite rare and they often look like just another room

Terraces are great for entertainment and casual gatherings

In that case, the balcony looks like any other room of the house but with more windows and usually more potted plants. In any case, the balcony or the terrace in Scandinavian design is an extension of the indoor living space and usually there’s some sort of cohesiveness between the spaces.
